Summary

Aged thirteen, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and an absent father, miraculously survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart。 Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend。 Theo is tormented by longing for his mother and down the years clings to the thing that most reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld。

look。 this book isn’t terrible。 but i read the secret history by Donna Tartt and it was just so much better。 the goldfinch has everything it needs to be an amazing book, the story is very interesting but it not well written like her other novel。 this book is 771 pages and for what。 it was not a fun read it was a task。 but i am glad I read it。 if this book was 300 pages shorter i think it would have been enjoyable。 the character were really well written。 i cant get over how much i loved Boris and look。 this book isn’t terrible。 but i read the secret history by Donna Tartt and it was just so much better。 the goldfinch has everything it needs to be an amazing book, the story is very interesting but it not well written like her other novel。 this book is 771 pages and for what。 it was not a fun read it was a task。 but i am glad I read it。 if this book was 300 pages shorter i think it would have been enjoyable。 the character were really well written。 i cant get over how much i loved Boris and how he was written。 mymother and i both agreed that we could perfectly imagine Xandra, i felt like i could smell her。 the dialogue was real written。 but the real downfall of this book and that it’s over hyped。 i’ve had countless people recommend this book to me and i don’t know why。 so if anyone is reading this and considering grabbing a copy of goldfinch and would say only read if you’re a regular reader。 this is not a book that will get you back into reading and it’s definitely not a page turner。 i think this book is worth trying out and seeing if it’s for you。 people love this and book and people hate it so i think there’s a 50/50 shot you won’t be disappointed。 。。。more

Just re-read The Goldfinch。 If you are an art lover you will really enjoy this book。

This is a wonderful book for those who know, or at the very least, appreciate that life entails a great deal of suffering, but in the midst of the suffering, there is beauty that stretches into eternity。 I see in other reviews that many feel this book has a Dickensian influence。 I disagree with that。 I do, however, feel a decidedly Dostoevskian influence。 Indeed, the Idiot, is referenced at a couple key points of the novel's plot。 As one who has loved Dostoevsky for decades, I can say, he would This is a wonderful book for those who know, or at the very least, appreciate that life entails a great deal of suffering, but in the midst of the suffering, there is beauty that stretches into eternity。 I see in other reviews that many feel this book has a Dickensian influence。 I disagree with that。 I do, however, feel a decidedly Dostoevskian influence。 Indeed, the Idiot, is referenced at a couple key points of the novel's plot。 As one who has loved Dostoevsky for decades, I can say, he would certainly appreciate the rumination on the relationship between suffering, beauty, and love。 。。。more

I found it long, slow paced (most of the time), the plot was minimal and I still don’t even care。 Donna sure can write a pretty book。 The last section was beautiful。 Totally gripped, 5/5。

Another great book by Donna Tartt。 The story twists and turns and good character development。 It’s long & took awhile to get through。

laura

it was SO long but the message at the end was really cool

This book could have been a great read if it had fewer words。 Was there a word quota the author had to meet? Basics of the book: boy misses his mom, makes a lot of bad decisions, and loves a painting that reminds him of his mom。

I have to admit I have read the book after having watched the movie, but I still enjoyed it。 It wasn't an amazing book, but it was enjoyable to read so I gave it 3 stars。 I have to admit I have read the book after having watched the movie, but I still enjoyed it。 It wasn't an amazing book, but it was enjoyable to read so I gave it 3 stars。 。。。more

I was on cloud nine after reading this book。 It's a shame that I placed this on my TBR list for a long time。 Although lengthy and slow, I believe that made this book fascinating。I love open endings and this book gave me more than an ending。 A week of late - night sleep I say was definitely worth it for I learned very much。 I was on cloud nine after reading this book。 It's a shame that I placed this on my TBR list for a long time。 Although lengthy and slow, I believe that made this book fascinating。I love open endings and this book gave me more than an ending。 A week of late - night sleep I say was definitely worth it for I learned very much。 。。。more

Wow。 I haven’t been so drawn in and immersed by a book in quite a while。 This is a dark, heavy read, and yet it’s also about the magic of life, with its many dark and cruel corners。 I will be thinking about this book for a long time, that’s for sure!

An impressive journey, but clumsy at times。 I was disappointed by the concluding meditation, which essentially strung together a series of existential truisms verging on satire (“Because, here’s the truth: life is catastrophe” or “The painting has taught me that we can speak to each other across time” or “If disaster and oblivion have followed this painting down through time—so too has love”) in an attempt to patchwork an ending onto the plot's many unanswered questions。 An impressive journey, but clumsy at times。 I was disappointed by the concluding meditation, which essentially strung together a series of existential truisms verging on satire (“Because, here’s the truth: life is catastrophe” or “The painting has taught me that we can speak to each other across time” or “If disaster and oblivion have followed this painting down through time—so too has love”) in an attempt to patchwork an ending onto the plot's many unanswered questions。 。。。more

If you’re going to write a long story, this is the way to do it。 The story, although not necessarily exciting/thrilling, has a way of captivating your attention where you feel like you’re really there listening to this story being told by Theo or like you were there with him when it all happened。 The details on the writing set the scene and make the characters in a way that made it all feel so real。 Yes at times I felt a little bored and wanted the story to hurry up, but that’s probably my want If you’re going to write a long story, this is the way to do it。 The story, although not necessarily exciting/thrilling, has a way of captivating your attention where you feel like you’re really there listening to this story being told by Theo or like you were there with him when it all happened。 The details on the writing set the scene and make the characters in a way that made it all feel so real。 Yes at times I felt a little bored and wanted the story to hurry up, but that’s probably my want for instant gratification and not a flaw with the book itself。 Going into reading this you have to have to ready yourself before and accept that it’s going to take a while to read。 I don’t think it’s a book that you should try to rush through。 It’s a slow burn at times but at the end of the day it’s a story that I’m going to be thinking about for a long time just for the fact of how real it all felt。 。。。more

I’m quite torn on this one。 One one hand the length drug on too long and I would have been happier with 400 pages, but on the other hand I feel like I really understand these characters and they almost feel like people I know。 Boris was easily the character I was most excited to hear about and he really carries a lot of the story。 However that means parts when he’s missing are much duller。 I’m not mad at this book, but I do think it became something different than what I thought it was and at ti I’m quite torn on this one。 One one hand the length drug on too long and I would have been happier with 400 pages, but on the other hand I feel like I really understand these characters and they almost feel like people I know。 Boris was easily the character I was most excited to hear about and he really carries a lot of the story。 However that means parts when he’s missing are much duller。 I’m not mad at this book, but I do think it became something different than what I thought it was and at times it was too flowery to me。 Can’t say I would recommend to a friend, but it wasn’t bad either。 UGH IM SO WISHY WASHY ON THIS!!! Ngl, I hated it。 The first 200-300 pages were alright, and there were a few bits I enjoyed more than the rest, but most of it was just dull and depressing。 I didn’t care about any of the characters。 The descriptions are way too long - why do I need 200 pages of Theo getting drunk and high? Honestly, I’m glad I’ve finished it。

hmmmmgood but gets laborious at times

This book is ultimately nihilistic, yet attempting to be hopeful in a "stare down that abyss because you're alive in this nasty place"-existentialist way like Albert Camus tried with "The Stranger。" Also, Camus at least managed that in less than 125 pages, which makes "The Goldfinch" 650 pages too long。 Waste of my time, but it wasn't so off-putting to make me not want to finish。 Definitely do not recommend。 This book is ultimately nihilistic, yet attempting to be hopeful in a "stare down that abyss because you're alive in this nasty place"-existentialist way like Albert Camus tried with "The Stranger。" Also, Camus at least managed that in less than 125 pages, which makes "The Goldfinch" 650 pages too long。 Waste of my time, but it wasn't so off-putting to make me not want to finish。 Definitely do not recommend。 。。。more

Reasonable。 Drinking to the point of actively trying to kill himself? Well, he survived, so it’s fine。 Overdosing and nearly dying in a business partner/mentor’s bathroom? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Jag tyckte den var bra men Donna tartt hade väldigt många bollar i luften när hon skrev denna, eftersom den utspelade sig under så långt tid kändes det som att storyn ändrades helt under vissa passager。 Jag hade hoppats på ett annat slut och en annan anledning till varför han var på hotellet men kan ändå acceptera storyn。 Jag hade dock lite svårt att hänga med i hans filosofiska monologer, det kändes som om tartt försökte lite för mycket där。 Den var dock bra annars, jag tycker om hur den är skr Jag tyckte den var bra men Donna tartt hade väldigt många bollar i luften när hon skrev denna, eftersom den utspelade sig under så långt tid kändes det som att storyn ändrades helt under vissa passager。 Jag hade hoppats på ett annat slut och en annan anledning till varför han var på hotellet men kan ändå acceptera storyn。 Jag hade dock lite svårt att hänga med i hans filosofiska monologer, det kändes som om tartt försökte lite för mycket där。 Den var dock bra annars, jag tycker om hur den är skriven och trots det svåra språket är den lättläst。 Man är taggad på att se vad som händer, och jag tycker även om karaktärerna。 Jag har läst andras recensioner på Goodreads som pratar om hur mycket ångest de fick av boken, men det kände jag knappt av alls。 Theo har ett ångestfullt liv och hans handlingar är inte de smartaste, men jag var mer intresserad om vad som skulle hända。 Jag tyckte även om konceptet att målningen var ett genomgående tema och att det ändå var den som på något sätt var huvudpersonen。 。。。more

this book was beautiful but incredibly slow and painful which im coming to think is a donna tartt specialitya side note: boris might be one of my favourite characters of all time

had 2 chapters left but couldn’t bring myself to finish it。 although it was amazing at times, the constant depressing-ness of the book got tiring and wore me out by the end。 Amazingly written and with many many chapters I loved, there was just not enough happiness for me。 Poor Theo couldn’t catch a break

Really liked it。 It's a story that's going to stay with me。 It did drag about 3/4ths of the way through, at which point I was also frustrated that the main character was making terrible decisions YET AGAIN。 So it's not perfect, but I found it very worthwhile。 Really liked it。 It's a story that's going to stay with me。 It did drag about 3/4ths of the way through, at which point I was also frustrated that the main character was making terrible decisions YET AGAIN。 So it's not perfect, but I found it very worthwhile。 。。。more

Something I wrote in my battered paperback after reading (and then re-reading, and reading once more) the last sentence of this book: “I love this book。 Through and through。 I feel as though the lines have been filled in a little more; the grayscale has widened itself to me, opening up a reality all the more enriched because of this book, its language, its tragedy & love。 I love it。” I toss out the word “love” like it’s something small, but I underwent a shift in my life while reading this book Something I wrote in my battered paperback after reading (and then re-reading, and reading once more) the last sentence of this book: “I love this book。 Through and through。 I feel as though the lines have been filled in a little more; the grayscale has widened itself to me, opening up a reality all the more enriched because of this book, its language, its tragedy & love。 I love it。” I toss out the word “love” like it’s something small, but I underwent a shift in my life while reading this book that I can’t help but associate the two with。 I devoured the near 1,000 pages in my paperback version, & I already want to go back and do it all over again。 。。。more
